Many countries rely heavily on their airport infrastructure, which connects local enterprises to worldwide markets and facilitates tourism as well as providing employment opportunities for inhabitants

.

Even if you've seen some strange airport designs like Japan's Kansai International Airport, which was built on the water, or Qatar's Hamad Aiport, I believe you'd be stunned by the engineering marvel utilised in the creation of Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo International Aiport.

Located in the municipal county of Santa Cruz in the Portuguese province of Madeira, the airport first opened its doors on July 7, 1964, and has been in operation ever since. But in 2006, it was called Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in honor of the Madeira-born footballer, and it has since grown to become the country's fourth busiest airport.

According to its geographical position, the airport is considered among the most dangerous in the world because of its short runway and closeness to mountains, hills and an ocean.

The following are some of the reasons why a qualified and experienced pilot is required to land and take off from the airport.

1. Some airplanes have difficulty accelerating or decelerating due to the windy conditions at the airport. The only way an experienced pilot can get around this is by maneuvering through.

2. Runways are only a few hundred feet long. In order for an airplane to produce enough lift and take off, it needs a long runway in order to get up to speed fast enough. However, the airport is built with a short runway.

3. Getting into and out of the airport is quite difficult because of the surrounding mountains' heights. As a result, pilots are instructed to fly around the airport, before making a 150° turn and landing on the runway in a very short distance. For these reasons, pilots must receive additional training before they can land safely.
