During his lifetime, Apostle Ayo Babalola was well-known for his revivals and crusades that transformed the hearts of people. He was born in Odo-Owa, a village in Kwara State, Nigeria, and devoted his life to spreading the gospel wherever the Holy Spirit directed him. To give their lives to Christ and proclaim him as their personal savior and Lord, the elect must endure a number of hardships. According to John 16:33, people who are completely immersed in Christ will be persecuted because they want to spread the gospel. The ministry of Apostle Ayo Babalola did not stop in the west region of colonial Nigeria; it extended all over the country. Even to the farthest corners of the country, like the Apostle Paul, he spread the gospel.

He was given the task of eradicating the occult's diabolical powers and occultist beliefs from society and the people, which goes beyond just occult dealings and traditional medicine. As the religious arm of the colonial government, the Church Missionary Society (CMS) opposed Babalola and the Aladura movement, the colonial government took a hard line against his activities. In the 1930s revival at Oke ooye Ilesa, in present-day Osun State, Nigeria, two years prior to 1932, the year of Babalola's arrest, God performed a great miracle in various categories through him.

A warrant for his arrest was issued in 1932 as a result of his ministry against witches in Otuo, a town in then-Benin in present-day Edo State, Nigeria. According to the allegations, he preached against and exorcised those who were afflicted with witchcraft. His six-month sentence was upheld. This was extremely sentimental, given the fact that the primary reasons for his arrest, as well as his subsequent imprisonment, were utterly fictitious. As soon as Apostle Ayo Babalola heard from the Lord, he greeted the event with faith, knowing that it would be used for the glory of God, according to Romans 8:28.

The CMS and the colonial government's envy of his success among the local population also played a role in his persecution. It spread to the prison authorities, who were positively affected by his ministration, that he was able to perform a number of signs and wonders in the prison, as well as the conversion of souls. After serving his time in prison, he was allowed to go home.
